Las Vegas: My Second Home

Viva Las Vegas!
Have you ever been to Las Vegas? Are you thinking about going? Well, here's a little tale that might swing your vote. I love Las Vegas. I've never been to a more bizarre, surreal, lively, gaudy, bawdy, oh lawwwdy city...and I can't stop thinking about it. When I was a young lad, my dad and my brother used to take the occasional trip to Sin City and they would always look forward to the trip. I didn't quite understand the attraction, but I swore that I would go as soon as I turned 21.
That promise, unfortunately, did not come to pass. The 21st birthday (and many more) came and went, without even an inkling of a thought towards the desert. Then, I took a trip.
Finding Yourself...?
The funny thing about taking a month long trip to...anywhere, is that non-travelers don't really understand the point of your journey. I would tell people that I was going to travel around the States, visit some friends and see the desert. With very little hesitation, they would look at me, nod and say, "Ahhh...going to find yourself?"
What kind of question is that? Find myself. I know exactly where I am. I'm right here. And in a month, I'll be in Vegas! And then, back here again. So I shook my head, doubtful that my friends could ever really understand that traveling is inherently awesome, and headed out.
My trip was amazing. I headed south along the east coast and stayed for a week in Myrtle Beach. Then I headed west, visiting friends in Austin and San Diego, took a walk down Hollywood's "Walk of Fame," hiked through the Grand Canyon and experienced numerous other beautiful moments. Finally, I found my way to the Las Vegas Strip and I knew that I had found my second home.
The lights, the themed hotels, the drunk people laughing on the sidewalks...what was this place and why had I taken so long to get here?
Now THAT'S a Castle

So why did I instantly connect with Las Vegas? It's too ridiculous to be ridiculous. It's so "out there" that it must be making fun of itself. It's a satirical look at the self-indulgence of the...look, it's awesome, okay? There doesn't always have to be an explanation that can be clearly defined. Sometimes, a place just "feels" right, even though you're almost embarrassed for it. But sometimes it's just confidence. Vegas knows that it looks good, dressed in clothes that are so mis-matched that they actually work.
On one side of the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard), it can take up to 15 minutes to walk from one hotel's front entrance to the neighboring hotel. Can you even fathom that? They share a property line! The Bellagio offers a fountain show, set to music that ranges from Elvis to Opera. The Mirage has a volcano on its front lawn...a friggin' volcano! At Treasure Island, pirates battle and boats sink. There's a castle, a pyramid, an Eiffel Tower, a circus, the New York City skyline, a Roman megalith, and the Venetian has canals, gondolas and singing...gondola people. (What do you call a gondola driver? Gondoleer?)
For Las Vegas, these types of attractions are the norm. That, in itself, is enough for me to fall in love with this city. There really is no city that can compare (unless France has a Euro-Vegas that has been and gone already...)
Riiiiiiight...
The Rep.
When I ask people what they think about Las Vegas, I get one of two answers: "Love it" or "Disgusting." It's really difficult to find people that take a middle ground, but I am convinced that it exists. The reputation for Sin City is...well...that nickname kind of gives it away. Images of gambling addiction, public drunkenness, lewd conduct, prostitution, poorly planned weddings, pawn shops and other negative things often surface in conversation. Again, some people are for them and others against. But why can't we just get along?
Here's my angle. If you want those things, you're going to find them wherever you can. The fact that they happen to all be available in one place is more a commentary on what people desire, rather than a city being "sinful" or "evil."
To me, it is a city of wonder. It is a physical manifestation of imagination. I have been to Vegas three times. I've not been arrested, paid for sex, forgotten my hotel room number (due to excessive alcohol consumption), nor even lost money at the tables (I'm probably in a small group of people to be able to claim that I have left Vegas with more money than I arrived with...however little that may be :)
So, if you have ever considered taking a trip to Las Vegas, I say go for it. Like most things in life, you'll get out of it what you put into it. If you have a gambling, drinking, or sexing addiction, I'd suggest "anywhere but Vegas." However, you can spend a whole week here just seeing the sights, without ever spending a dime on liquor, games or prostitutes. Check it out for yourself and you'll understand why I never want to stop returning to this city of wonders.

Congratulations on your hubnugget nomination. I've never been to las Vegas. I wuold be most interested in the shows, and the shows that wiuyld interst me the most are those of entertainers who have died. Not the right age.
I guess the name Sin City creates a certain impression so the response is varied. Thank you for sharing your story as it made me realize that there will always be something that one can appreciate, learn and enjoy from each experience---Las Vegas included! :D
Congratulations on your Hubnuggets nomination! Do check your email as well as this link to read and vote: http://simonesmith.hubpages.com/_hubnuggets6/hub/G Cheers to your second home! :D
Hi Matty, congratulations on your nomination! I have voted for this Hub and hope you win!
Hello Matty. Congrats on your nomination, I voted for you after reading your take on Vegas. Been there twice and plan to go back. One of the most accepting cities that caters to human nature in all its forms. By the way, LOVE THE HAT.
I loved getting away from it all in Vegas. We actually purchased a timeshare there and all of my kids have been able to stay there. You can virtually find whatever you want there, and there is good and evil - all up to you. I love their all you can eat buffets for affordable prices.
Congratulations on your hubnuggets nomination. Las Vegas is awesome. The reason I love it is because it's so out there. Great hub.
Namaste.
awesome .. I love Vegas.
Anyone I know that's been to Vegas keeps going back and enjoys it. They also usually win a substantial amount of money at the casinos. Glad you found your niche place to go and your hub is fun. Best wishes!
Great hub and congratulations on your Hubnugget nomination. Las Vegas is much like NYC in the sense the city never sleeps. I'm looking forward to some time off and enjoying some of the shows.
I celebrated my 25th Wedding Anniversary in Vegas and had a blast. We stayed at the Paris Las Vegas and loved it. I'm going back in a few weeks to attend my Nephews wedding to be held at Mandalay Bay. I am totally looking forward to it. I really like the pictures you put in you hub too. Voted UP! Congratulations on your nomination:)
Matty, I lived in Vegas three different times and went there twice as "just a tourist" (as a guide for friends who'd never been) and you're right about it being "too ridiculous to be ridiculous". It really has to be seen to be believed. However, to get the full effect, it HAS to be seen after dark. In the daytime, as one friend so aptly put it, "It looks like an old whore".
As for the "sin" part, believe it or not, when I lived there Las Vegas had more churches per capita than any other city in the U.S.! ;D
Anytime, Matt. Glad to be of assistance. Can't let a great new hubber leave the fold! ;D
Well done, Matty, you richly deserve your HubNugget award. Your writing is funny, useful, interesting and stimulating - as evidenced by all the comments here. May there be many more 'nuggets' from your keyboard!
Enjoyed your article. Here is a site I found useful for those planning a first trip to Sin City.

I used to find Las Vegas to be a fun place to go and try to get there once a year. Now that I am older, it just seems to have lost much of it's charm. I agree with the site's author that the Bellagio is about the best Las Vegas has to offer. Like the Cosmopolitan too.
Everbody should see Las Vegas at least once - gambler or not.

My daughter and I spent 5 days in Vegas last September. We loooooooved it! We spent time off the strip, on the strip and downtown. OMG....it's allllll wonderful fun! I'm dying to go back!
Great story, Kieran:)
The stuff of the Strip holds its appeal for those who come, no doubt.
I have a different take, as I grew up there. I dislike the Vegas of today, much of which has overwhelmed or replaced the nostalgia of youth for many...check out the Facebook group, "You Know You Grew Up In Vegas When...", which in a very short time, has become loaded with posts that reference so many individuals' memories, especially places that have gone by the wayside.
One of the favorite perspectives is the line we always got on out of state trips..."People actually live in Vegas?" or "Do you live in a hotel?". The big housing boom really made it an ugly place to live, from my point of view...big houses, far too close together, where you look out your window, and into the neighbor's house...considering we grew up having so much open space to roam and explore. Not the wide open place it once was, and growing up loving that wide openness, it's not a pleasant place to visit, for me. But again, this is the solitary perspective of a desert rat. :)
Thank you, Beata Stasak :)

Great story, Matty. I have only visited Vegas once, when staying with friends at a nearby USAF base. Apart from the awesome (I don't use that word lightly) strip, I remember being most impressed by what happened in a local bar where I was having a drink with my friends.
A 'cowboy' walked in, a gun slung on both hips. Naturally, being a Brit, I assumed that he was part of some Vegas act, just taking a break, with a set of dummy pistols. No Sir!
The barman said: "Just take your belt off, son, and give it to me". The cowboy did as he was told, rolling up the guns and holsters in the belt and putting them on the bar. Only then did the barman take his drinks order.
My USAF friends just said: "That's Vegas for you!"
A bit off topic, but that's what I remember about my Vegas trip! Keep up the good work.
